Pregnancy #2 Coming To An End

Posted in: Baby
23rd August 2016

You may have noticed I haven’t talked about this pregnancy that is coming to an end at all on the Blog. I guess because there is nothing great to say about it. All I can do is whinge and no one wants to hear that. But now that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel I thought I better say something before this Baby is here. The truth is, I have found being pregnant with a toddler very challenging. It’s been hard, harder than I ever thought possible. I have been so uncomfortable for so long, I […]

Sharing Some Of Our Favourite Stories – An Update on Ghana

Posted in: Family
ripple1

When Andrew and I went to Ghana last year, it started a ripple effect, thanks to a little boy named Kwaku. There is no way we ever planned on making a difference to this extent. By us going there, it ignited something in people to help out too and because of people caring, lives have changed and it’s pretty mind blowing. The best way to demonstrate this ripple effect and how it has and continues to change lives, is through a timeline. It all started in 2012 -Andrew and I decide to travel to Africa, not for a holiday, rather […]

Losing Toby

Posted in: Dog
8March722

A few weeks ago we all went out into the city to grab a bite to eat and get some coffee. We walked back to the car and I told Toby to get in when Andrew said, ‘Come check this out.’ I told Toby to get back out of the car and we went to see what Andrew was looking at. He talked about how these pavers at the front of someone’s house were the ones he wanted for our house. After chit chatting about it we got back into the car and drove home. At home Andrew hit the books, Thomas […]

If You Don’t Have A Hobby In Life, Life Is Going To Get You Down

Posted in: Family
Toby in Poppy 2

My Mum used to always say to me I needed a hobby. Growing up I never had one. My dad desperately tried to push me into music but I just didn’t care for it. Mum hoped I would find a passion in arts and crafts and join her on the kitchen table in the evenings but that never happened either. And I gave up sport as a teenager, the one thing I used to actually enjoy. ‘If you don’t have a hobby in life, life is going to get you down,’ was my Mum’s mantra. She actually had a couple of sayings on high […]

Getting Toby Ready for Baby #2

Posted in: Dog
thomastoby2

Toby has experienced a lot of changes in his 4 years of life. Once upon a time it was all about him but with the tornado of changes Thomas brought along last year, Toby has had to adapt to a new life. He has done well, we’re so proud of him. Those of you who’ve been following along, know that Toby did not like Thomas when we brought him home from the hospital. And next month things are going to change once again and we’re getting Toby ready for those changes. A couple of years ago I wrote an article for […]

Reading With A Toddler

Posted in: Baby
June 17th 2016

What I’m missing most about teaching is reading books with the kids every morning and having wonderful, meaningful discussions about the story afterwards. In my classroom we would start every morning off with a book and discuss whether the book we just read was a quality book. I remember once purposefully sourcing out a particularly bad book and reading it to the class. As soon as I finished reading the last word one of my students called out, ‘Now that was NOT a quality book!’ I loved that they had gotten to the point of identifying what makes a quality book. […]

Toby Wigglebottom Nominated for the Bupa Blog Awards 2016

Posted in: Dog
TobyandHelena

A month or so ago a lovely Toby Wigglebottom fan emailed me to say that she had nominated this Blog for the Bupa Blog Awards 2016. Not knowing anything about it, I emailed back with a ‘Thank you so much!’ and left it at that, I didn’t actually think anything would come of it. Then last week I got an email from the Bupa Team informing me that out of 600 entries we are one of the 5 finalists in the Pet Category for 2016. I had to reread the email a few times to comprehend what was going on […]

Caring For Your Pooch In Winter

Posted in: Dog
DR ZOO 15

We are well and truly into winter in our neck of the woods. Most days we are rugged up to our eyeballs and brave the cold for our walk. Although I love walking when the air is nice and crisp, I don’t love the way Toby looks at the end of it. His paws are always dirty, his face is wet, leaves and twigs get stuck in his fur and he smells. When we get home I give his paws a good rub with a towel and that’s it. I know I should be giving Toby baths more often in winter […]

4 Years

Wedding_HighRes_Colour-358

We are celebrating 4 years of marriage today. I don’t get as excited about our wedding anniversary as I do with our ‘how many years we have been together’ anniversary. 16 and a half years sounds like a bigger achievement than 4 years. We got engaged when we were both 20. It was a bit of a mess engagement, really. We had been dating for 4 years at that stage and had never talked about marriage. We were young and were having fun. We went on our first holiday overseas together, Germany, Italy and France. Unbeknownst to me Andrew was […]

4th July 2016 (19)

This Toby of ours is the greatest furball there ever was. We are continually in awe of him. We find ourselves saying we need to be more like Toby all the time. He has the qualities we wish we could display on a daily basis. Kind, patient, loyal, understanding, the list goes on. I have said this before, but Toby has helped me throughout the last 16 months with this whole parenting gig. He knows when we need him and he knows when he needs to give us some space. I have needed Toby a lot since Thomas was born. From […]
